Alternative learning centers provide educational services for students in grades K who: are experiencing behavioral challenges; are experiencing academic difficulties; need a nontraditional learning environment; are involved in serious disciplinary incidents; For more information, please contact your child’s school counselor or call There were area learning centers, 50 alternative learning programs, eight contracted alternatives and targeted services programs during the school year.

Alternative programs operate year-round and may be offered during the day and after school. The Alternative Learning Center is a school community built on second chances—and a deeply rooted belief that every student desires and deserves to achieve their greatest potential.

Students attend the ALC for a variety of reasons, including social and discipline challenges at their home schools as well as community-based incidents.

East View Academy, Metro Heights Academy, and Mahtomedi Academy are alternative high school programs that we call area learning centers. We also offer after-school credit recovery classes at North and Tartan High Schools, and at Metro Heights and Mahtomedi.

Project Return is another school option for students in grades who are facing suspension or expulsion from their home schools. Our alternative schools provide specialized settings for students who need non-traditional pathways to personal, academic, and social success.

If you think your child might benefit from an alternative learning experience, or your child has dropped-out or struggled in school, we encourage you to learn more about these unique non-traditional. Student involvement at the Area Education Center (AEC) requires a credit deficient status or other issues impacting credit attainment.

Some students come to the AEC needing only one or two classes late afternoon classes, and continue to attend Brainerd High School. some choose to attend AEC full-time, and still others have a blended schedule that allows them to take some classes at AEC and.
